Route Description

The race begins Friday at 12:00 PM from the Far and Wide Mountain Centre. Before you set off, ensure you have all the compulsory gear, as it will be checked. You will spend the night unsupported in the mountains, so self-sufficiency is crucial.

Stage 1: The Mutarazi Challenge

The course starts with a gentle descent along the Honde Valley escarpment, leading to the Mutarazi Falls SkyWalk—Africa’s second-highest waterfall. Strap into your harness and cross the SkyWalk, taking in the breathtaking views before continuing an epic traverse along the escarpment to Ringing Rock. Don’t forget to ring the rock as you pass!

From here, descend into the Honde Valley, passing beneath Mutaroro and Mutarazi Falls—some of the most spectacular indigenous forests you’ll ever see. But the real challenge begins now: an extremely tough 7 km ascent, climbing 1,000 meters. The final 2 km alone demand a 600 m gain, pushing you to your limits.

Reaching the Far and Wide Mountain Centre marks Checkpoint 1 (32 km)—a chance to refuel with a hot meal. However, the cut-off time is 9 hours (21:00), so pace yourself wisely.

Stage 2: Into the Pungwe Gorge

Leaving the checkpoint, you descend into the Buwu Valley, before tackling a 2.5 km climb (300 m gain) up Chikorokoto. Once at the top, turn right and follow the ridgeline before descending into the stunning Pungwe Gorge.

At the bottom of the gorge, you’ll navigate upstream through lush forests until reaching the confluence, where a mandatory gear check awaits before you cross the mighty Pungwe River.

Next comes another brutal climb—3.5 km, gaining 750 meters. Just when you think you’ve reached Golden Pools, a few more rolling ascents await before you finally hit the breathtaking Nyazengu Ridge.

At Golden Pools (56 km), you’ll find a major aid station, packed with nutrition and enthusiastic supporters. Take advantage of this stop, as the cut-off time is 16 hours (04:00).

Stage 3: Up the Pungwe & Beyond

Now, the route heads toward Mt Nyangani, but before the ascent, you’ll veer right, descending back into the Pungwe Gorge. From here, you’ll run along the river, soaking in the views of this untamed wilderness.

The next major challenge is a 2.5 km climb (350 m gain) out of the gorge, ascending above Pungwe Falls. After crossing the Pungwe River above the falls, the course continues along the Pungwe grasslands, tracking the Pungwe and Mutenderera Rivers until reaching Golden Pools for the second time (96 km). The cut-off time here is 27 hours (15:00).

Stage 4: The Final Push

With 32 km to go, the final leg begins with a small descent past Golden Pools, revealing pristine streams and pools. But don’t get too comfortable—you’re about to face the most demanding climb yet.

At the base of Mt Nyangani, take a deep breath—the ascent to the summit is 7 km with an 850 m elevation gain. Once at Checkpoint 9 (The Crags), keep straight (instead of turning toward the summit), following a 5 km ridgeline to Little Nyangani. Though this section offers a slight descent, it is still demanding.

From Little Nyangani, you’ll enter the never-ending forest descent—a grueling downhill stretch that eventually opens into the Muruwi Nutrition Station. Here, you’ll refuel before crossing the Nyawamba River and tackling The Wall, a 240 m climb over just 1.8 km, leading to the summit of Dzunzwa.

The final stretch takes you down one last river, before emerging onto Aberfoyle Golf Course. The last 200 meters will feel endless, but the drums, cheers, and ice-cold beer at the finish line make it all worth it.

The Ultra 56km kicks off from Far and Wide Mountain Centre, deep in Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands. This race is a true test of endurance, combining steep climbs, rugged terrain, and breathtaking scenery.

Stage 1: Into the Pungwe Gorge

The adventure begins with a 2.5 km climb, gaining 300 meters—a brutal wake-up call as you tackle your first mountain. Once at the top, turn right and traverse Chikorokoto, before descending into the stunning Pungwe Gorge.

At the bottom of the gorge, you’ll follow the Pungwe River upstream, navigating through dense forests until reaching the confluence, where a mandatory gear check takes place before you cross the mighty Pungwe River.

Then comes the hardest climb of the race—a relentless 3.5 km ascent, gaining 750 meters as you fight your way out of the gorge. Just when you think you’ve made it, the Nyazengu Ridge throws in a few more rolling ascents and descents before finally leading you to Golden Pools (23 km).

Here, you’ll find a nutrition/aid station packed with supporters and fuel for the next stage. The cut-off time at Golden Pools is 7 hours (11:00)—miss it, and you’ll be pulled from the course.

Once there, take a deep breath—from the base to the summit, it’s a 7 km climb, gaining 850 meters. Conquer Zimbabwe’s highest peak, then continue along the ridgeline for 5 km to Little Nyangani. This section offers a slight descent, but don’t be fooled—it’s still demanding.

From Little Nyangani, the trail plunges into a never-ending forest descent. And we mean never-ending. Eventually, you’ll break into open grasslands, where the Muruwi Nutrition Station awaits.

Route Description

Stage 1: The Mutarazi Descent (0 – 10km)

The race kicks off Friday at 08:00 from Far and Wide Mountain Centre, immediately dropping into a technical 7 km, 1,000m descent toward the base of Mutarazi Falls. This is an extremely technical section, demanding careful foot placement and focused energy management as you navigate the steep, rugged terrain.

Upon reaching the bottom, runners cross the Mutarazi River, where the landscape transforms into a dense indigenous forest, shrouded in mist and alive with the sounds of nature. From here, the long climb begins, setting the stage for the next grueling challenge.

Stage 2: The Ringing Rock Ascent (10 – 23km)

Look up and take in the sheer majesty of Mutarazi Falls (762m) and Mutaroro Falls (700m) as you wind along narrow, technical single-track trails deep within the riparian forests. This section is not for the faint-hearted—over the next 13 km, you will gain 1,000 meters in elevation, tackling relentless switchbacks, slippery terrain, and exposed ridgelines.

The final 1 km of this climb is where the real mental battle begins—a punishing incline that will push even the strongest competitors to their limits. But perseverance will reward you with the arrival at Ringing Rock, a famous geological landmark where runners are encouraged to strike the rock for luck as they pass.

At Ringing Rock, a small nutrition station awaits, offering a critical chance to refuel before the final stretch. A strict cut-off time of 7 hours (15:00) applies here—miss it, and your race ends.

Stage 3: The Traverse to the SkyWalk & Final Push (23 – 32km)

With the hardest climbs behind you, the course now transitions into a breathtaking traverse along the Honde Valley escarpment. Runners will pass through open protea fields, where stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains unfold.

Then comes an unforgettable moment—the Mutarazi SkyWalk. Harness up and brace yourself as you step onto the 98-meter-long suspension bridge, floating high above Mutarazi Falls. This thrilling crossing is both a test of courage and an opportunity to take in the sheer grandeur of Africa’s second-highest waterfall.

From here, the final section begins—a gentle ascent through Afro-Montane forest, leading you to the finish line at Far and Wide’s Mountain Centre.

Crossing the finish will be a moment of triumph, greeted by cheering supporters, a well-earned meal, and the camaraderie of fellow runners. Prize giving will be held Friday night at the Mountain Centre, where the epic adventure will be relived over good food and great company.

This isn’t just a race—it’s a journey through some of Zimbabwe’s most spectacular landscapes, demanding grit, strength, and an unbreakable spirit.
